About the 118 118 Money data breach
The circumstances of the 118 118 Money data breach has been raised with us by one of our clients who sent us a copy of the breach notification issued to customers.
This said:
On Friday 20th March we discovered an illegal unauthorised access to our network which includes 118118Money.com. We regret to inform you that recordings of customer service calls were accessed by the criminals responsible for the cyber attack. As a result, we are writing to all of our customers to inform them of this.
The email went on to confirm that those affected may include anyone that contacted the customer services line, with exposed data including:
- Names;
- Addresses;
- Birth dates;
- Other personal information discussed during a call.
Aftermath of the breach
The 118 118 Money data breach has led to the usual apologies and breach notifications being sent to victims that we often see in the wake of an event like this.
The notification email states that the company takes data protection matters extremely seriously, but the damage has already been done. They are now said to be working with cybersecurity experts to ensure that their networks are secure moving forward, but we ask: why wasn’t this done before the breach took place?
The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has been made aware of the incident. As we have seen from the British Airways and Marriott data breaches, the ICO is prepared to issue substantial fines in accordance with the GDPR that could run into the millions of pounds.
Making a claim for compensation
Victims of the 118 118 Money data breach could be entitled to make a claim for compensation with us and we’re offering No Win, No Fee support.
The company claims that there’s a “low risk of your data being used fraudulently”, which appears to fail to grasp the efforts that fraudsters often go to when they misuse exposed data. It doesn’t matter that it may be time-consuming for fraudsters to go through stolen data to extract relevant information; they can still do it. At the same time, software can be used to identify words and phrases to make the job a great deal quicker as well.
Cybercriminals should never be underestimated, and no data breach should ever be passed off as small when personal data has been exposed in a cybersecurity event. The risk of phishing is a real threat as well which we’ve seen in previous cyberattacks where fraudsters can even pose as the company breached and pass themselves off as customer service agents trying to assist.
Victims may be eligible to claim compensation for the distress caused by the loss of control of personal information, as well as for any losses and expenses incurred. All you need to do is contact our expert team for free, no-obligation advice today to find out if you’re eligible for our No Win, No Fee representation.
