HSBC successfully defend a cyber attack on final Friday for payday and tax returns

With the financial Christmas hangover, and self assessment tax being due at the end of the month, January can be a harder time for us all. On the cusp of this key weekend, HSBC has announced that it has successfully defended a DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) cyber attack today.

Although customer’s personal information appears safe for now, the attack has disrupted services which will no doubt be a cause for concern for those eager for payday or paying their self assessment tax before the deadline this weekend.

DDoS attacks are one of the more common forms of cyber attacks where servers and websites are overloaded with traffic to bring them down. As Data Leak Lawyers we often have to discuss grave news of cyber attacks that have resulted in personal, confidential, and financial information being leaked and stolen. So it’s a nice change when we hear that a company as prominent as HSBC has successfully repelled an attack.

Service downtime aside, it could have been a lot worse had they have been successfully breached.

Both the BBC and the Irish National Lottery have been hit in the last month from DDoS attacks, and HSBC are now said to be working with the authorities to track down those who are responsible.
