There has been yet another Marriott data security breach with this one now being its third major incident in just a few short years.
We have taken legal action for UK victims who were affected by the previous infamous Marriott cybersecurity data breaches, so it is surprising to see yet another event hit the hotelier. We would have thought, given the previous incidents that have taken place, they would have responded to make sure that their cybersecurity prevents this sort of incident occurring. Unfortunately, given that there has been yet another incident, it appears that there are still weaknesses that cybercriminals can exploit.
About the latest Marriott data security breach
According to media reports, the latest Marriott data security breach appears to involve cyberhackers stealing some 20GB of information from the hotelier. It appears that the server in relation to the Marriott Hotel in Baltimore-Washington International Airport in Maryland was the target.
Media outlets suggest that the criminals who say they are behind the attack have shared proof of the information that they have stolen. In response to the alleged attack, the hotel chain is understood to be investigating what has happened.
Impact appears to be in the US
According to media sources so far, this latest Marriott data security breach appears to be limited to a particular hotel in the US. As such, this is not really a case of us being able to advise on anybody’s rights, as we could only help people if the data breach affected anyone in the UK.
However, it is important that we cover these stories, particularly as we have pursued legal action for UK victims of the infamous cybersecurity incidents that Marriott was also affected by over the last few years. In fact, this latest Marriott date security breach is the third to hit the hotel chain in just a few short years, which could suggest that there are serious systemic problems in relation to their approach to cybersecurity.
The previous incidents they were affected by were substantial and warranted a huge multi-million pound fine issued by the Information Commissioner’s Office. As such, it is surprising to see that there is yet another story of yet another attack that has hit the hotel chain.
Increasing group action claims
At Your Lawyers, we are Leading Data Leak Lawyers which means that we represent thousands of clients who are engaged in data breach compensation cases, and we have been fighting for justice in this niche and complex area of law for several years. Thousands of those who we represent are engaged in large data breach actions, and these are commonly data security incidents where hackers expose or steal swathes of information, or where there is a large leak or inadvertent access or disclosure event.
As society continues to become more digitised, the risks in respect of cybersecurity are obvious to see. A real problem is that it only takes one small weakness in a defence to affect potentially millions of people. Any cybersecurity defence really is only as good as its weakest link, and one weak link could lead to an entire system being compromised.
This is why we have seen increasing numbers of group action claims in recent years and we ourselves have launched over 50 group and multi-party actions just for data breaches alone. This goes to show how often these kinds of events are happening and how many people are affected.
For eligible clients in cases where we think there are prospects of success, we can represent victims in large group action cases on a No Win, No Fee basis. Anyone who has suffered from a data breach can be entitled to receive free, no-obligation legal advice from our expert team here now.
