There’s been a recent Caerphilly council data protection incident where the personal details of a family were published on its website
Council data protection incidents are unfortunately common. Councils hold a wealth of personal and sensitive data about us, and if this isn’t protected, a breach can cause serious harm to the victims.
With councils and local authorities often committing data protection breaches, we help a lot of people claiming for data breach compensation arising from their local council. A lot of the individual claims that we deal with involve local councils or outsourced local authority agencies.
Recent Caerphilly council data protection incident investigated
Investigations into a recent Caerphilly council data protection have reportedly drawn to a conclusion.
In the incident, the information of a traveller family was somehow published on its website. It’s understood that there had been a planning permission application with the local council. However, that doesn’t mean personal information should be published on a public website.
A spokesperson in the wake of the Caerphilly council data protection incident said:
“The incident has been investigated and has drawn to a close. Measures have been taken to reduce risk of a similar incident occurring in future.”
The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has been informed about the incident. With the GDPR at their disposal since May 2018, they can issue fines in the millions of pounds to data breach offenders.
