The impact of cyberattacks

The impact of cyberattacks on victims can be substantial, and we can talk about this from a position of a great deal of experience.

At Your Lawyers, as a leading firm of privacy claims experts, we have been fighting for the rights of privacy victims since 2014. This is a great deal longer than many other firms out there which means that we have represented people in some of the major incidents for a long time. These include the TalkTalk cyberattack of 2015, the Equifax hack of 2017, and some more recent infamous ones like the British Airways and Ticketmaster attacks in 2018.

What this means is that we truly understand how badly people can be impacted when their personal and private information is misused and exposed. We know how frightening it can be to learn that criminals now have access to your payment card details, or perhaps your identification information. Even simple personal details being exposed can be harrowing, as they can lead to fraudsters contacting people to try to scam them.

A recent example: The Works

When we talk about the impact of cyberattacks, we are usually coming from the perspective of the impact on the victims. After all, we are privacy claims lawyers, and it is the victims that we help.

Whilst we touch on the impact of cyberattacks on the organisations also, it can be useful to look at a real example. One such example that was reported earlier this year involved online and high street retailer The Works.

When The Works was reportedly hit by a cyberattack, they were forced to close some of their shops temporarily, and it also had to suspend some of its deliveries. Customers of The Works faced delays in being able to shop online as well.

This all stemmed from what has been reported as a ransomware attack, with The Works confirming that it has already taken steps to increase its security. What this could imply in respect of the state of its security before the attack took place remains open to interpretation.

Claim compensation for a breach of data privacy

If you have suffered from a breach of data privacy laws, you could be entitled to claim compensation now on a No Win, No Fee basis.

The GDPR can allow you to claim damages for any distress that has been caused by the loss of control of your personal information. You do not have to have lost any money to be able to claim, but if this applies, we can also look to include claims for losses and expenses in a legal case also.
