We are concerned that victims may end up being targeted by ransomware and scams, and it is important that those affected are protected as much as they can be.
What happened in the Lister Fertility Clinic cyber incident?
It is understood that the Lister Fertility Clinic data breach involved a cyberattack on a third-party provider called “Stor-a-file” which the clinic uses for scanning medical records. The clinic is one of over a dozen organisations to be reportedly affected, and it may impact some 1,700 patients of the clinic.
With the company dealing with medical records scanning, it is foreseeable that any information exposed in this cyberattack could be incredibly personal and sensitive. This kind of data is often seen as one of the most sensitive and personal that there is, so the impact on victims can be substantial.
Letters sent out to patients – and lawyers’ warning
It is understood that some 1,700 people who may be affected by the Lister Fertility Clinic data breach are receiving correspondence to confirm that they may be affected by the cyberattack. Whilst it is not yet known who may be affected or what information may have been exposed, the 1,700 figure appears to be what is considered to be the extent of the problem so far.
The actual cyberattack could be far wider, as it is understood that the company hit by the cyberattack has revealed that some 13 organisations could be affected.
We feel we must issue a strong warning to those who receive a letter to be careful about what happens next. In these kinds of data breaches, it can be the case that criminals could try to demand ransoms from victims on the threat of exposing their personal and sensitive medical information. A clinic in Europe was hit by a similar problem where hackers were able to issue ransoms and threaten to release very sensitive and intimate images of women who were undergoing cosmetic surgery. As such, the threat of criminals taking such action is very real, and we urge all victims of the data breach to be very wary.
