81,000 private messages hacked in Facebook data breach
One recent Facebook data breach incident involves the reported sale of private messages that have apparently been hacked from Facebook accounts.
Some 120 million accounts were apparently compromised that led to 81,000 hacked messages being put up for sale. Some of those affected appear to include UK citizens.
Facebook is said to have plugged the holes in security issues, which are understood to have stemmed from third-party extensions. These can include apps and browser add-ons.
In a statement, Facebook said:
“We have contacted browser-makers to ensure that known malicious extensions are no longer available to download in their stores.
We have also contacted law enforcement and have worked with local authorities to remove the website that displayed information from Facebook accounts.”
The infamous Cambridge Analytica Facebook data breach
The infamous Cambridge Analytica Facebook data breach is still fresh in our minds. The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) fined Facebook the maximum amount under the old rules; £500,000.00.
In the post-GDPR era, this could have been millions.
This particular Facebook data breach was classed as a “serious breach” where Facebook had allowed access to people’s data “without clear consent”. They were found to have unfairly processed data and failed to keep it secure.
Data collected was then used for political marketing purposes.
Hackers breaking into Facebook accounts
There have also been Facebook data breach incidents where hackers have been able to break into accounts and steal personal information.
Data stolen included search histories, location data, religious views and relationships information, to name a few.
Facebook reportedly refused to offer protections for victims of this particular hack, where some 14 million users were reportedly affected. They’ve faced heavy criticisms for the way they have been at the heart of a number of breaches, and how they have handled the aftermath of breaches.
