Issues of scam calls from a data breach, leak or hack can be one of the real risks that occur when information is exposed in a privacy event. This is why we often say that it only takes a little bit of information, such as personal contact details, for people to suffer significant distress as a result of a privacy incident. Scam calls from a data breach can be one of the common things that takes place, and it can be very distressing for people to be inundated with telephone calls from people who are trying to dupe them.
Even when people do not fall for such scams, the distress alone of having to deal with an influx of such calls can be huge. This is taken into account when we pursue a claim for compensation where information has been misused or exposed as a result of some form of negligence that leads to scam calls from a data incident. We will always make sure to factor in any impact that an incident has had on the victim so we can properly assess the right data breach compensation pay-out they could be entitled to receive.
For eligible clients, we can represent people on a No Win, No Fee basis for a legal case. The best thing to do is contact our team for free, no-obligation legal advice here now.
There have been a few examples from the past where scam calls from a data breach have taken place. One of the most infamous ones was that of the TalkTalk cyberattack of 2015 when a number of people reported that they had been subjected to calls from people claiming to be TalkTalk. They had information that was relevant to their accounts, so some people, unfortunately, fell for the scams and believed they were talking to legitimate employees. In some cases, people lost thousands of pounds because they thought they were dealing with TalkTalk themselves and were helping them with known issues in respect of their accounts.
There have been other examples, but one of the most infamous ones from abroad was that of computer maker Dell who was previously hit with a class action in Canada as a result of a data breach taking place in 2017. As a result of this incident, it was reported that people received scam calls, with some receiving several a day, which must have been incredibly distressing.
We represent people pursuing easyJet data breach claims for compensation where some 9 million people were affected. This was a monumental cyberattack that resulted in a significant number of people suffering distress as a result of what happened.
When there are incidents that involve such high volumes of people, there can be a greater likelihood that people may fall for scams, as criminals may try to contact many people who have been affected. If more people are affected, there could be a higher chance that at least one of those people they speak to will fall for some kind of scam. It is important that organisations involved in cyberattacks do all they can to protect the people affected.
